The Bike Tour Analogy: Making Work Work, CEO Series Vol. 3

Last week, I was in a meeting with a real estate developer who told me about his recent vacation to Spain, a bike tour through the back roads.

The tour company took riders through the Serra de Tramuntana, along the beautiful towns of Mallorca, making stops at castles and farmhouses you would have no idea were even there. One would think it would be hard to pick a favorite part of the trip.

But it wasn’t.

He said the best part was that you just got on your bike and rode. No decisions. No logistics. No thinking. Everything was taken care of so you could stay fully in the moment, trusting you’d see the most incredible places and eat the most unforgettable meals. He even joked that he wanted to do marketing for the company, because every day felt like the best day ever... until the next one topped it.

Then he added:

"Workbar is like that. You know that everything is ready for you to have a good day at work.  But what’s more special, is that it’s done far better than you could have done on your own and you get far more out of it than you ever expected.”

Wow. How awesome is that to hear? I always say how, as a working mom and CEO, I need to get more out of my 9-5 than just work. I need to fill my social and emotional buckets as well as my professional one, and I do.

We’ve built Workbar to be the kind of place where companies feel confident sending their people, and where members know they’re in good hands. The basics are covered. The Wi-Fi’s fast. The coffee’s hot. A seat is ready in an environment intentionally designed for you to do your best work.

I spend a lot of my time thinking about how our members feel in the space and how that feeling carries into the rest of their day. Work shouldn’t wipe you out. I want our members leaving Workbar ready for the next part of their day, whether that’s coaching soccer practice, enjoying dinner with friends, or curling up on the couch with a book and your pup.

I know I sound like Pollyanna a lot when I describe how Workbar can impact your whole life. Of course every day isn’t going to be the best day ever. But I know I’m doing something right if, more often than not, our members walk out feeling productive and happy.

August 9th is International Coworking Day, and yes, we’re celebrating. Our team has some super fun and thoughtful programming rolling out all week. We also take this time to talk to our members about how coworking actually impacts their lives. One theme that comes up over and over again is the feeling of being part of something bigger than yourself. It’s walking into a Workbar, saying hi to someone new, solving the problem that had you stuck yesterday, or learning something unexpected at a lunch and learn.

Happy Coworking Day to all our members and future members, who make Workbar more than just a place to work.
